Why a Pregnancy Test Isn’t Enough

A pregnancy test only detects the hormone hCG, which can indicate a potential pregnancy. However, a pregnancy test alone does not confirm a viable intrauterine pregnancy.

Only a viability ultrasound can tell you:

  • Where the pregnancy is located
  • Whether the pregnancy is developing
  • How far along you are

This information is essential for protecting your health and making a fully informed decision.

Confirm the Pregnancy Location

About 2% of known pregnancies develop outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. Because a fallopian tube can’t support a growing pregnancy, it can rupture as the pregnancy grows, causing internal bleeding that requires emergency medical treatment.

Abortion pills will not treat an ectopic pregnancy. Without a viability ultrasound, this serious condition could go undetected and delay critical care. Confirming that the pregnancy is located in the uterus is an essential first step.

Determine If the Pregnancy Is Viable

About 1 in 4 pregnancies ends naturally in miscarriage. Because pregnancy hormones can remain in your body for days or even weeks afterwards, you could still receive a false positive pregnancy test result even if the pregnancy is no longer progressing.

A viability ultrasound evaluates for signs of development, including the presence of a fetal heartbeat. If a miscarriage has already occurred, your medical needs may be different from what you expect. An ultrasound helps determine the appropriate next steps and can prevent undergoing an unnecessary abortion procedure.

Know How Far Along You Are

If you are considering abortion, knowing how far along you are is important. The FDA has approved abortion drugs for use only through 10 weeks gestation. Taking them beyond this timeframe may increase the risk of complications or an incomplete abortion, which can require additional medical treatment.

Estimating pregnancy dating based solely on your last menstrual period can be inaccurate due to irregular cycles, stress, or hormonal fluctuations. A viability ultrasound provides a more precise estimate of gestational age, so you clearly understand your options and potential risks.
