No matter how long (or little) you’ve been with a partner, the news of an unexpected pregnancy can be scary and overwhelming.
However, it does help if you are committed to making a decision or at least exploring the options together. The more informed you are, the easier it will be to talk through them.
At Women’s Clinic Maryland, we offer free options consultations where you and your partner can get more details on each option (abortion, parenting, or adoption) in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
Learn More About Your Pregnancy
You’ve likely already taken an at-home pregnancy test (although we offer free medical-grade testing). If you are considering abortion, the next step is to schedule an ultrasound. The information you’ll learn from this important scan includes:
- Pregnancy gestational age: Knowing the age affects your options. For example, the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks.
- Pregnancy Location: Whether or not your pregnancy is located in the uterus affects what procedures you are eligible for. If it is located outside the uterus, this is an ectopic pregnancy; this is not eligible for an abortion and requires immediate medical attention.
- Pregnancy viability: Ultrasounds also show whether you’re still pregnant or have miscarried. Up to 1 in 4 pregnancies miscarry.
Make Your Partner Feel Included
Try to include your partner in the process because he is partially responsible, and you deserve his support. That means processing your feelings with him, sharing your learnings, and listening to him as he shares his thoughts. Ideally, you will decide together, but remember that the choice is yours.
Complete a Pre-abortion Checklist
At Women’s Clinic, we are committed to providing free and confidential services (although we do not provide abortions). This includes ultrasounds as part of your pre-abortion checklist. We also offer free STD testing as a part of our comprehensive care.
