About the Abortion Pill
The abortion pill is a series of two drugs taken within 48 hours of each other. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. Next, misoprostol is taken to induce uterine cramping to expel the pregnancy.
The abortion pill is only FDA-approved up to 10 weeks (70 days) into the pregnancy, so you’ll first need an ultrasound to confirm the gestational age of your pregnancy.
If you’re considering abortion or are unsure, we offer a free viability ultrasound at our clinic, where you can confirm the pregnancy’s location and viability. If it is located outside the uterus, it is an ectopic pregnancy and requires immediate medical attention. Confirming the viability will also confirm whether or not you’ve miscarried.
What Are the Side Effects?
After taking the abortion pill drugs, you will notice vaginal bleeding and cramping in the stomach area. Some of the other potential side effects include:
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
What Are the Risks?
While the abortion pill means taking powerful drugs, it is still a serious medical procedure. Some of the possible physical risks include:
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
